Canaliennes

There are a lot of beautiful women in South France, and one finds them in the most unexpected places.

While riding between Font-Romeu and Nîmes (Spoiler Alert!), I noticed that every few miles, there would be a woman sitting in the shade at the end of a canal or ditch. This struck me as peculiar because they were more well dressed than I'd expect to see for a woman sitting on the side of the road near a canal or ditch.

While stopped for lunch, Matty said that he thought they were prostitutes. All the evidence corroborates that:

• Well dressed, made up women on the side of the road on a day hot enough that one would prefer to be inside
• Generally some parking area nearby
• A road heavily used by delivery trucks, i.e. professional drivers

This is a situation where Occam's Razor prevails, and the overtness of the situation is surprising. It seems that they could hide it a little by setting up some kind of stand, such as fruit, beverage, or gelato. Who knows, they may even get more sales that way. A "Jean" (see what I did there? That's French for John) might think "Hey, I feel like paying for sex. There's a girl right there, but I know that if I drive a little further, I can also get a pineapple, some horchata, and gelato."
