Cortina Roads: More Video

There's a non-fiction novel by John Steinbeck called "Travels With Charley" that has been my choice of non-electronic entertainment for the dead zone between zero and 10,000 feet during takeoff and landing. The novel was written while he traveled across the country with his dog, Charley.

Narcissism was probably the force that compelled me to read the book in the first place, however, it has become a book to which I can return at any time because Steinbeck describes with great color and imagery the places that he visits. Of particular note is his description of San Francisco and driving across the Golden Gate Bridge; any person who has spent time in the San Francisco Bay Area can immediately envision what he saw as he drove across the bridge.

Also noteworthy among the anecdotes in the book is an amusing one about the Giant Redwood Forest. Steinbeck describes how he imagines that, for a dog, a giant redwood must be a life changing spectacle because of the special relationship that dogs have with trees.

On this trip, Cortina d'Ampezzo and the Dolomite Mountain region were my Giant Redwood Forest because they are on a scale that is like nothing that I have ever experienced.

So, here is a litte clip from one of the roads leading out of Cortina. Despite the bugs on the windscreen, you can get glimpses of the Dolomites in the background and also see the quality of the roads.
